Two Decades of Selfless Care: A Foster Family Nurtures 67 Children with Love

Mr. and Mrs. Tam became emergency foster parents in 2003. Over the past two decades, they have cared for 67 foster children aged 0 to 9, primarily focusing on infants. Mrs. Tam recalls caring for a 9-year-old girl, during an outing, she caught the girl shoplifting at a stationery store. Mrs. Tam patiently explained that stealing was wrong and instructed her to return the items. To her heart-wrenching surprise, the girl replied nonchalantly, "My parents often take me to convenience stores to steal things." Deeply saddened by these words, Mrs. Tam became even more determined to help children in need and guide them toward the right values.

A Special Baby

A little over a year ago, a one-month-old infant was placed with Mr. and Mrs. Tam. Caring for him was no easy task; he often slept through the day and cried throughout the night. Mr. Tam, a retired ambulance officer with over 30 years of service, stepped up to handle the early morning shifts, holding and soothing the baby to sleep every night. He soon noticed abnormalities in the baby’s eyes that his pupils shifted constantly and could not focus. Months of medical examinations yielded no definitive diagnosis, offering only preliminary findings of low muscle tone and visual impairment, with his actual degree of vision remaining uncertain. Worried that a transfer to a new environment would be too difficult for the child to adjust to, Mr. and Mrs. Tam made the thoughtful decision to switch from “Emergency Foster Parent” to “Regular Foster Parent”, allowing the baby to remain safely in their home.

To avoid missing the critical window for early intervention, Mr. and Mrs. Tam visited multiple early childhood training centres even during the Lunar New Year holiday, seeking the most suitable programme for the baby.

Today, they take him for monthly check-ups, follow-up medical appointments, and therapy sessions. Under their dedicated care, the once-bewildered little boy now grows and thrives every day, surrounded by laughter and love.
